Student media are an integral part of Marquette University's educational mission. They function as a learning opportunity for students outside the classroom as well as a source of news and entertainment for the Marquette community. As such, they actively contribute to the free exchange of ideas that strengthens an academic institution.
Marquette University, a Catholic and Jesuit institution, is the publisher and owner of student media outlets: The Marquette Tribune, Marquette Journal, Marquette Radio and MUTV, as well as related activities, including online applications of each.
Through the university's Student Media Board, the chief editors and managers are selected and delegated ultimate and final responsibility for the content of the publications and broadcasts. To be effective, it is understood that they must remain independent from those seeking to influence or control the content.
Chief editors and managers work closely with their respective faculty advisers to create and enforce review methods to prevent publication or broadcast of material that is legally problematic, including libel, slander and invasion of privacy. Care is also given to assure that material published or aired is tasteful and consistent with community standards.
Chief editors and managers are directly responsible for ensuring fairness and accuracy in the material they print, broadcast or publish online. Under their direction, members of the respective editorial staffs adhere to the high standards expected of quality journalism, including avoiding plagiarism and conflicts of interest.
